Feeling like Hannah Montana
To my 10+ readers – I apologize for going ghost mode after my two-week streak! To be fair, I did preface in my first post that I’m just a girl, and there will be mistakes along the way.
Anyway, I’m sure you’re all wondering what I’ve been up to and whether I’m actually going to commit to this hobby. Well, outside of work, I’ve had a lot of family time and travel, so mostly good things! Some not so much, but I’ll spare you the details. All that to say: with everything going on, I’ve been struggling to form a thought—let alone share my PR industry horror stories and insights with you all.
The best way to describe how I feel is: Hannah Montana. There’s been a lot of back and forth between my two separate lives (Manhattan vs. the suburbs, my social life vs. family life, or being a rockstar at work vs. coasting by).
One thing that has helped is taking advantage of working from home. The physical shift—from the office to my parents’ screened-in porch—has been absolutely electric. Being surrounded by loved ones really helps reframe your perspective on what’s actually important. My team might spiral into a fire drill when an influencer receives the wrong lipstick shades between 3 and 4 p.m., but when I’m home with family, my laptop closes at 6 p.m. no matter what. I enjoy a nice meal and get some quality R&R with the people I love. Because that’s what matters.
So if you have any WFH flexibility, I highly recommend taking full advantage of it. It’s a great reminder that we are more than our little email jobs. Life is more than your job title. Spend time with the people you love. Be selfish. Take a break from being a girlboss before you burn out.
But anyway, let’s finally get into some of the funny moments and horror stories from life as a publicist. Leave a comment below on which one you want me to share first:
• The internship Uber ride panic attack
• How I threw up outside my office last month
• The time my boss told me she needs me to “think the thoughts before she thinks them”
